Why is my sharkbite fitting leaking?

In general, SharkBite fittings only leak due to one of these reasons: The pipe was not properly deburred prior to installation. The pipe was not properly inserted. The pipe has scratches or debris on the outside that is preventing the O-ring from getting a watertight seal.

Keeping this in view, how do you stop a SharkBite from leaking?

Do's

  1. Cut the copper pipe gradually.
  2. Outer edge of the copper pipe must be reamed clean – we advise to ream/deburr the inside also to reduce turbulence.
  3. Measure – pipe must be fully inserted into the fitting to a depth specified in instructions.
  4. Use PEX stiffener (insert) when using push fittings with PEX tubing.

Additionally, how does a SharkBite fitting seal? The SharkBite® connection system uses an advanced push-fit design that works in two stages. When the tube is inserted into the fitting it passes the first stage through a release collar and then through a stainless steel grab ring. The grab ring has teeth that open out and grip onto the tube.

Keeping this in consideration, how long do SharkBite fittings last?

25 years

Are SharkBite fittings reliable?

If you need to repair or replace copper plumbing in your home, a SharkBite fitting is an excellent choice. Sharkbites are approved for use underground and behind walls, but installing them there could be risky. A SharkBite fitting contains a rubber O-ring, which is not best for permanent connections.

To answer your question, no, Shark Bite fittings are not recommended by professional plumbers. Only because they can charge you much more for the installation if they have to sweat copper. Basically the same reason they don't recommend PEX, they can charge much more for the installation.

If it's a small area that's leaking, you could just replace that section with either PEX or copper. If you do need to replace your existing pipes, PEX — or, cross-linked polyethylene flexible tubing — is certainly one of the more popular options, and for a number of reasons.
