I gave this 3 stars only because I have only had it one day so I don't think that is long enough to fairly analyze it yet. I purchased the WEN 4214 first and the one I received was defective. I have a project with maple and hard walnut, using a 1-1/4" forstner bit. On my first use with the WEN, the motor overheated and started smoking, necessitating the use of my fire extinguisher. While waiting for the return to be processed on the WEN I went down to my local store and purchased the Jet JWDP-12. While I have them both in my shop side-by-side I will note some similarities and differences. Many of the smaller parts are the same and are probably manufactured in the same factory. Those would be things like the wrenches, the base, the column, etc. However, the working parts, the things I am most interested in, are different. The tables are very different. The Jet table is a much sturdier cast iron with very different t-slots for mounting accessories. The chuck on the Jet also feels more robust. The main difference for me is the motor. While WEN says theirs is 2/3 HP and Jet says theirs is 1/2 HP I have to give Jet the better rating for the motor. Clearly the WEN could not handle my maple and hard walnut project while the Jet had no problem drilling the 1-1/4" holes. The motors are different in appearance and in sound. The WEN, right out of the box, had a strange clicking noise. The Jet runs very quietly and smoothly. I suspect they have very different internals, such as bearings, although I cannot verify that. I suspect they are also wired differently. I say that because of the difference in actual low speed and high speed I can get while plugged into a 25 foot, 20 amp extension cord. They might be closer in performance if plugged directly into the outlet, not through an extension cord, but I also cannot verify that. For me the price difference is worth it because of the customer support. I could not get any response at all from WEN customer support while I have dealt with Jet before and I trust their customer support. I hope this helps.

Up front, I'm a machinist and tooling designer. The problems I found, I was able to correct, but not everyone will. First, the cast baseplate was warped diagonally. I had to grind the 4 "feet" in the casting to correct this problem, using the machined top surface as a reference. Second, the variable pulley mechanism was very hard to adjust and didn't produce the full range of RPM's advertised for this model. Being that I KNOW how these systems work, I was able to properly disassemble and correctly lubricate the moving parts in a manner that wouldn't allow lube to migrate to the belt. This isn't something 95% of buyers would be able to do correctly without guidance. I now have the full (even better) range of rpm's advertised, and it's far easier to adjust speed now. The chuck itself has a slight wobble to it, but I plan to put a better chuck on the press. If you want precision with small drill diameters, this would be an issue. Don't over-tighten the black knobs on the spindles or the variable speed lever, as they'll crack. Overall, a good press for the money, but it shouldn't have taken 4 hours of my time to make it work like it should.

The table cannot be made to be at 90 degrees to the vertical support pipe (and hence to the drill bit). The clamp that locks/unlocks the table vertically also is responsible for allowing the table to rotate around the vertical support pipe, so when you loosen the clamp to crank the table up or down, the entire table assembly can rotate out of position - pain in the ass when youâ€™re trying to bore a long hole. The hokey â€˜laser guideâ€™ canâ€™t be adjusted such that the target cross is not in the shadow of the chuck unless you set the vertical position of the crossover far down from the tip of the bit. If this steaming pile of chinesium was purchased locally it would have been returned after the first week.

Arrived in good shape, well boxed and with foam inserts for protection during shipping.
All parts accounted for. Lightly oiled for rust protection. Easy assembly.
I had looked at a Sears model earlier in the week. It had a nice machined table with holes and slots. It would have been easier to bolt clamps etc to the table. Didn't realize Jet had t-slots. Will have to buy a set. :( Not a big deal. I will probably drill and tap some holes in the table to make clamping easier and more versitile. I do like the oil moat around the table. It will make cleaning a little easier. All in all, i am quite satisfied with this purchase.
One person said that the digital readout stayed on all the time. I found that by turning on the light, then shutting it off, that the digital readout also shut off.

Exactly what I was hoping for at this price. I mostly use a press for hardwood and 1/4â€ or less hot rolled steel. This press is great for these. On a magnetic base dial indicator, I get .001 runout on the top of the arbor and .002 on the shaft of a chucked Freud forstner bit.

The overall build and speed control is great. If I had to nit pick, the table requires t nuts as opposed to through bolts, but this gives you the option for a cooling system for metal drilling. The chuck is great but has some metal cuttings inside that I wouldnâ€™t expect (pic). These donâ€™t affect its functioning. The arbor had one nick large enough to catch my fingernail on (pic), but it obviously didnâ€™t have a big effect on runout.

Iâ€™d love to have a $2k drill press, but for my needs, Iâ€™d rather have this press and $1600 in my pocket.

I wanted a table top drill press that I could move when I wasn't using it. The Jet weighs 90 pounds and unless you are a weight lifter forgetaboutit. And did I mention it's big. Although a woodworking friend of mind said that Jet was the best. So if you have a place to put it I guess it's great.
